FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

GARIFUNA HERITAGE IS OUR HERITAGE

The New Democratic Party wishes to condemn out of hand the fear mongering and blatant attack launched at all Garifuna people here and in the Diaspora by Ralph Gonsalves and the Unity Labour Party yesterday.

We in the New Democratic Party acknowledge and add our voice to the loud outcry by Vincentians across the country who reject in disgust the Prime Minister’s assault on the Garifuna Nation. To say that the Garifuna will take away jobs and homes from Vincentians is utter rubbish.

Our history is one, our heritage is one, and it redounds to the benefit of us as a people to embrace our Garifuna brothers and sisters. Rather than seeing loss of jobs and property. We see just the opposite. We see positive benefits to the economy of St. Vincent and the Grenadines both in Tourism and private sector investment, as our relationship with the Garifuna deepens.

The NDP is clear in our position on this matter. Our offer of honorary citizenship is open to all Garifuna. Let me reiterate, the NDP will work along with the Garifuna to inculcate in our national cultural education and Vincentian product, aspects of Garifuna culture including the history and language, which reconnects them with us as a nation. This includes some form of permanent national monument to the Garifuna to be located at Balliceaux.

The NDP will grant honorary citizenship to all Garifuna and the form which this honorary citizenship will take will be determined in consultation with the Garifuna the NDP and the People of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines in the upcoming weeks. The process will require constant consultation, and we are committed to the process.

End./
